September 2026 marked the 70th anniversary of commercial television transmissions in Australia, so it seems fitting that the October meeting of the club focuses on television.
Not commercial television – amateur television, which had its birth in Australia well before commercial television.
The WANSARC club is proud to have been a major sponsor of the Melbourne Digital Amateur Television Group in the transition from Olinda to the current repeater location at Mount Waverley. The club continues to support DATV and in fact Neil, VK3BCU, a valued WANSARC Committee member and DATV enthusiast, generally hosts the Tuesday evening DATV net which commences at 8.00pm local time.
Our guest presenter at the October club meeting is the driving force behind DATV in Melbourne, Peter VK3BFG.
Peter is no stranger to our club and WANSARC is delighted to have Peter attending our next meeting to provide an update on recent activities and future projects in the DATV world. Peter will be ably assisted on the night by Neil, VK3BCU.
This is an excellent opportunity for those in the club that have not been exposed to DATV to ask questions relating to equipment required for transmit and receive, including:
- How do I get on the air?
- What types of transmitters can be built and experimented with?
- How do I receive the DATV repeater?
- What set top boxes will allow me to receive DATV RF direct?
- What antennae is the best to receive the repeater?
Transmissions from the VK3RTV repeater are vertically polarized, so if you are in a good location relative to Mount Waverley you may be able to receive the repeater using a set top box and a standard UHF vertical antenna. Transmitted signals into the repeater are horizontally polarized in the 1240-1250MHz band via a yagi or dish antenna.
So come along to the next meeting and satisfy your DATV curiosities by talking with some experts on amateur television.
Doors open around 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start at the 1st Strathmore Scout Hall, 136 Lebanon Street in Strathmore (just 50 metres or so north of the Essendon Fields boundary fence).
If you are having trouble finding the club rooms, give a call on 146.450MHz. At least one member is usually listening on the frequency.
