The next meeting of WANSARC will be held on Monday, September 7, 2026 with a change of pace for this month with a practical activity.
Sharpen your Stanley knives, find your best measuring tape and side-cutters, it is time for the WANSARC antenna construction night.
Club Vice-President Greg, VK3CN, has been enthusiastically co-ordinating planning for the night for the last few months and as a result 13 club members have nominated to build a half wavelength “Flowerpot” antenna for the 2 metre band.
The “Flowerpot” antenna uses RG58 coaxial cable as a radiator, incorporating a coil wrapped around a suitable length of plastic PVC pipe. It can be scaled for any band, however the VHF 2 metre version has been chosen as a vehicle for members to learn the technique of building this type of antenna. Incidentally the antenna can be designed as a VHF/UHF dual band antenna, if desired.
After each antenna is built, an antenna analyser will be used to determine the resonant frequency and bandwidth of the antenna. In this way suitable adjustments can be made, if necessary.
At the end of the night, members will be able to walk out of the clubrooms with a brand new antenna, ready for testing on the club liaison frequency, 146.450MHz FM.
If you have not elected to build an antenna on the night, come along to the meeting anyway and learn how to build your own “Flowerpot” antenna. The more the merrier.
Doors open around 7.30pm for an 8.00pm start at the 1st Strathmore Scout Hall, 136 Lebanon Street in Strathmore (just 50 metres or so north of the Essendon Fields boundary fence).
If you are having trouble finding the club rooms, give a call on 146.450MHz. At least one member is usually listening on the frequency.
